BPEC Competency Challenge

The Technical Skills & Applications Badge certifies that the recipient has demonstrated proficiency in foundational biotechnology techniques used in the industry. This includes both theoretical knowledge and practical application of methods such as aseptic technique, cell culture, DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and chromatography. Recipients are skilled in using advanced laboratory equipment and are knowledgeable about current biotechnology techniques and their applications.

The Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Badge certifies that the recipient has a strong understanding of the molecular and biochemical principles that underpin biotechnology. This includes knowledge of DNA structure and function, gene expression, protein synthesis, and enzymatic activity. Recipients are proficient in techniques such as monoclonal antibody production, immunotherapy, and mRNA therapeutics.

The Regulation & Quality Badge certifies that the recipient has a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory environment and quality practices in biotechnology. This includes knowledge of CGMP, GDocP, and compliance with FDA guidelines. Recipients are familiar with the processes involved in product development, regulatory approval, and maintaining data integrity and security.

The Biotechnology Skills Badge certifies that the recipient has mastered essential technical skills for quality work in biotechnology. This includes accurate measurement of liquids and solids, preparation of solutions, and use of standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and spectrophotometers. Recipients demonstrate proficiency in performing serial dilutions and aseptic techniques.

The Standard Equipment Badge certifies that the recipient is proficient in the identification, use, and maintenance of standard laboratory equipment. This includes safe operation of micro and macro pipettes, balances, pH meters, and other essential tools. Recipients ensure the accurate and safe handling of equipment, including calibration and validation.

The Experimental Design & Data Analysis Badge certifies that the recipient has a strong understanding of experimental design and data analysis principles. This includes designing experiments with proper controls, maintaining laboratory notebooks, and applying statistical methods. Recipients are skilled in analyzing data, identifying sources of error, and effectively communicating scientific findings.

The Applied Mathematics Badge certifies that the recipient possesses the mathematical skills required for common bioscience workplace calculations and data analysis. This includes using scientific notation, performing metric conversions, and solving molarity and dilution calculations. Recipients are also proficient in generating and interpreting data graphs and applying statistical analyses.

The Safety & Workplace Culture Badge certifies that the recipient has demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols and ethical standards in the biotechnology workplace. This includes understanding personal protective equipment (PPE) use, hazardous material handling, and compliance with regulations enforced by agencies such as OSHA. Recipients are well-versed in emergency response procedures and proactive safety communication.
